Whether it occurs in public or in private, violence and abuse is unacceptable and we are determined to help prevent it. It is important to note that this can effect anyone, regardless of gender, sexuality, religion, race or disability.

Domestic abuse is any threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between adults who are or have been in a relationship, or between family members. The abuse can be psychological, physical, sexual or emotional, and can affect anyone, regardless of their gender or sexuality. Domestic Abuse is rarely a one-off incident, as it is usually a pattern of power and control over you.

Help is always available, but the first step is reporting the problems you are experienceing in order to receive the support you need. Some victims are vulnerable, and the Protection of vulnerable adults section can provide more information on this.

Domestic Abuse can affect children as will as adults. They can be traumatised by what they’ve seen or heard. If you are concerned, the Safeguarding children (opens in a new window) website provides more information.

The Every Child Matters section of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) website can give you advice and contact information (opens in a new window).

Victims and Witnesses

The Derbyshire Constabulary website contains useful information for those who have been either a victim or witness to a crime, to help them through this period and provide reassurance. These pages include video introductions that highlight the processes involved, and useful links to other local services that might be of help. Visit www.derbyshire.police.uk/victimsandwitnesses (opens in a new window) to find out more.

Hiding your tracks

If you are worried about someone knowing which web sites you have visited, you can take several steps to increase your safety when using the internet. The Victim Support site provides a practical guide to safe website usage. They have a guide to safe website usage (opens in a new window) to show you how to browse safely. The best way to browse safely is to use the free internet at libraries, or use a friend's computer.

Please see our pledge, in the resource directory for information on what we promise to provide in Derbyshire.
